An autumn refresh should respond to falling leaves, wetter surfaces and reduced daylight, rather than repeat a summer-cleaning checklist. This guide helps homeowners decide which exterior tasks need attention before winter.
Start with leaf debris and drainage
Look from ground level for overflowing water, plants in gutters or staining below the roofline. Nearby trees may continue to shed leaves after an initial clear, so the timing should reflect what is collecting at your property.
Check light and visibility through glazing
As daylight reduces, dirt on windows and conservatory panels can become more noticeable. Keep routine window visits separate from an occasional conservatory-roof clean, and make access arrangements before the visit.
Assess shaded paving and rendered walls
Check paths and patios for slippery organic growth, and rendered walls for green or dark staining. Hard paving and render require different methods: the material and its condition should guide the choice. Cleaning does not remove the risk of ice or repair damaged joints.
Agree the autumn cleaning scope
Make drainage the first check where leaves or moss have accumulated. Autumn gutter clearance addresses debris inside the system; the guide to gutter cleaning before autumn and winter explains how to time a visit around local leaf fall.
- Report visible gutter overflow and the amount of nearby tree cover.
- Identify the glazing and roofline surfaces you want included.
- Describe the paving or render material if known.
- Discuss access, gates and any areas that need a separate assessment.
